A Texas judge on Tuesday canceled public proceedings for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s divorce from state Sen. Angela Paxton, R.
Paxton’s attorneys told The Hill that private negotiations had made progress and both sides no longer believed a trial was necessary.
“We are optimistic that a final agreement will be reached in the near future,” they said.
Angela Paxton announced her divorce from Ken Paxton amid the start of his Senate campaign, which ultimately saw him secure the support of President Donald Trump and beat Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, for the party nomination. The Texas GOP primary saw $88 million spent, according to Fox4.
The development is likely good news for Ken Paxton, whose tenure as attorney general has faced scrutiny, including an unsuccessful impeachment attempt.
Though the race is expected to favor the Republican, Ken Paxton appears to face a formidable challenger in Democratic candidate James Talarico.
A poll released by the Texas Public Opinion Research shows Talarico leading Ken Paxton by three points: 47% to 44%. The poll found 50% of likely voters are still unsure of who they will vote for.
According to the poll, one-third of Cornyn supporters will vote for Talarico over Ken Paxton. Talarico has a 57-point lead over Ken Paxton with moderate voters: 72% to 15%, the poll said.
The Cook Political Playbook, a nonpartisan election analyzer, rates the Texas Senate race as leaning towards Republicans.
